Meet the women who made Amsterdam. Too many tours reduce female Amsterdammers to working women and Dutch feminists when women have done everything from changing society at the highest levels to making culture to defying spiritual powers. This storytelling walk through Amsterdam’s historic center explores the way women across the centuries pursued their goals in the face of societal and structural resistance. Let them energize and empower you as you see the city from a new angle.
Explore Amsterdam’s medieval center with an engaging storyteller. This tour goes through the heart of Amsterdam, from Central Station to the Spui via Dam Square. Our guides use stories of individual women to connect guests to Amsterdam throughout the ages.
Undoubtedly the most famous Amsterdammer is Anne Frank, but she’s the only woman mentioned on far too many tours. Which is a shame, because they’re missing some amazing stories. From medieval religious enclaves to Resistance hideouts in World War II, women built this unique city – sometimes literally! We’ve chosen our favorites from across the city’s history for this walking tour.

Why are so many female writers connected to this spot? What allowed this place to remain a Catholic haven in the heart of Protestant Amsterdam? And how is a 17th-century act of defiance still remembered today?

The tour goes through Amsterdam’s oldest neighborhood, Centrum. Our stops include the Beurs van Berlage, Dam Square, the Nes, the Rokin, the University of Amsterdam, the Spui, and the Begijnhof.
The per-person ticket is a public group tour, where other people may join you on your walking tour. The private tour is just for you and your friends/family.
Overall, the tour is empowering and entertaining. Some stories mention topics like war, birth control, sex work, sexual orientation, and the gender spectrum, though without going into detail. We’ve had guests younger than ten who really enjoyed the tour, but each child is different. Feel free to reach out with questions.
For now, our public tours (the per-person tickets) are only available in English. For Spanish, German, or Dutch, please email us.
We tell the stories of 16 badass women from throughout Amsterdam’s history. Only two called themselves feminists – and they did a lot! However, all of the stories include the challenges women faced throughout history and how these women fought to overcome them.
Anne Frank and Audrey Hepburn are probably the most internationally famous. Kartini is a national heroine of Indonesia whose story intersects with Amsterdam. Queen Wilhelmina, Aletta Jacobs, and Bet van Beeren are probably the most well-known in the Netherlands.
Our goal is to shine a light on untold stories. Anne Frank told her own story so well that her book has been translated into 70 languages and made into movies and TV programs around the world. The Anne Frank House also does a superb job of telling her story. We decided to focus on the inspiring Amsterdam women whose stories haven’t been told.
