This tour explores Amsterdam’s contradictions and quirks. We start in the bustle of Amsterdam’s Jewish Quarter and proceed through the graceful Plantage neighborhood. Along the way, we explore things you might not know about Amsterdam, but definitely should.
Did you know Amsterdam’s Black history extends back to at least the 16th century? Or how Indonesian women shaped Amsterdam and fought the VOC? On this tour, you’ll hear the different ways women’s history can be written and rewritten, sometimes by the women themselves. You’ll meet Jewish Amsterdammers whose impact is felt across the Netherlands and all over the world, even if their names or origins are forgotten.
This small-group walking tour takes you off the beaten path to sites that surprise Amsterdammers and guests alike. By discovering many of Amsterdam’s hidden gems, you’ll get a sense of what makes the city and its people so unique. See a different side of Amsterdam’s history and contrasting neighborhoods.

Is that a diamond in that tower? Why does this quiet street have a building that looks like a castle? Is that an Amsterdam architectural style? And how did the people who built this fight religious and gender discrimination while raising the Dutch standard of living?

We go through the historic Jewish Quarter, the Plantage neighborhood, the University of Amsterdam and end at the Amstel. Along the way, we see City Hall, the statue of Spinoza, Waterlooplein, the Moses and Aaron Church, the Portuguese Synagogue (Esnoga), the Hortus Botanicus, the ANDB (Burcht van Berlage), the Artis, the Artist’s Resistance monument, and the H*Art/Amsterdam Museum.
The per-person ticket is a public group tour, where other people may join you on your walking tour. The private tour is just for you and your friends/family.
Overall, the tour is empowering and entertaining. Some stories mention topics like war, birth control, sexual orientation, slavery, and the gender spectrum, though without going into detail. We’ve had guests younger than ten who really enjoyed the tour, but each child is different. Feel free to reach out with questions.
For now, our public tours (the per-person tickets) are only available in English. For Spanish, German, or Dutch, please email us.
We tried to explore the topics and people that make Amsterdam special but tend to be overlooked by tourists and locals alike. That means we go into a quieter neighborhood for part of the tour and that we talk about people who influenced Amsterdam – and the world! – without making their names famous.
There aren’t many windmills left in historic Amsterdam. On the far side of the Plantage neighborhood is the excellent brewery ‘t IJ, which is located in a windmill. Our tour doesn’t go that far into the neighborhood, but we can direct you there. One of our stops is Berlage’s Burcht, which is one of the famous architect’s lesser-seen buildings, due to its location on a quiet residential street.
While we do go to the Jordaan and the Anne Frank House on our private tours, this public tour is to show guests a hidden side of Amsterdam. The Anne Frank House sells out within minutes of releasing its tickets and the word is definitely out on the Jordaan. We decided to set this tour in a less-explored part of the central city.
Private Museum Tour
See the highlights and hidden icons of Amsterdam’s world-renowned Rijksmuseum in a private guided tour that explores who creates art and what stories it’s used to tell. And don’t worry about museum tickets. We’ve got you covered.
